White draughts, that reached the eighth horizontal, as well as black draughts, that reached the first horizontal, are considered as draughts anyway, i.e. there are no kings here. ..." but then in the sample the white piece makes both forward and backward jumps? Perhaps it should say that all draughts move like kings.

In the statment this in not the case, furthermove if it is true then we can't take droughts. So two possible options: 1) all the draughts are situated in black cells; 2) all the draughts are situated in white cells.
